Henry sure can't sing can he. The truth is that he can't even carry a tune in the proverbial bucket. The missionary's wife said it was horrible to stand beside him in the service and have to listen to him sing.
The missionaries returned to the states on furlough. Maybe the worst part of the service in Arequipa was the music. No one really knew how to play an instrument. The missionary sure wasn't very good in music. The other young men did alright but that was about it.
Henry had grown up in Hunter. His family was very poor. His dad and mom worked in the "chacras" or fields harvesting crops. When the first missionary in Hunter invited Henry to church he was really interested. He went to church and soon accepted Christ as his personal savior. He got baptized just before the missionary that was to be his pastor took over the church.
Henry had grown up with a drunken dad. He would watch and cry as his dad came home drunk and would beat his mother and hurt the children. He lived in misery. There was no joy in his home. When the missionary began to preach he was very excited. He liked what he heard. His dad would not allow him to go to church so he would sneak out by jumping from the roof to the street. He would run to church to hear the gospel preached. When he got home his dad would beat him for going but even that wasn't enough to stop him. He loved God and wanted to know more and more.
Henry always had a great big smile on his face. He seemed always to be so happy and friendly. He didn't show much interest in preaching so the missionary had not spent a great deal of time with him. Henry had won many to Christ. He had even had his very own little "Source of Light" Bible school while he was in high school. Source of Light is a series of Bible lessons that have the lesson and then a place to answer the questions. It is often called the "Mailbox Club". Henry had gotten the lessons from the missionary and used them in his school to win his friends to Christ.
Henry became very burdened for his dad, mom and family. He told the missionary that God would never save his dad or change him. His dad was a very hard man. The missionary explained to him that he should pray and cry out to God for the salvation of his dad. He must believe that God would work in his family. Henry began to pray. God moved. His dad came and got saved. He quit drinking and beating his mother. Henry couldn't believe what God had done in his life. Today his dad is not faithful to the Lord and Henry continues praying that he will come back.
When the missionary left Henry began to ask God what he could do in his church for the Lord. One day he borrowed a guitar and decided that he wanted to learn to play. He knew that the church needed some form of music. He would learn how to play and then he could help his church have a better music program for the honor and glory of God.
Henry, the boy who couldn't even carry a tune, sat down and ask God in prayer for a miracle. Teach me to play the guitar and sing and I will use it for you and your glory. Within a few hours Henry had learned to play the guitar and sing. No one taught him. He was alone in his bedroom with God. He went to church and the brethren were so impressed that he took over the music service each week.
When the missionaries arrived in Peru again they could not believe their eyes. Henry was singing and playing guitar in front of the whole church. The missionary asked his wife. How is he doing? The wife said she couldn't believe her ears because Henry was doing a great job.
Several years have gone by. Now Henry leads the choir in the church. Teaches classes on how to direct the service and music. Teaches others how to sing and play instruments. He is truly being used of God in this way. In the Bible College Henry is the music teacher.
Maybe you just want to know what you could do for God. Why don't you just ask Him and then give yourself to God to be used of Him. God is looking for men and women, boys and girls who just want to be used. What are you doing for God?
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service. Romans 12:1
Neither yield ye your members [as] instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members [as] instruments of righteousness unto God. Romans 6:13
