The Catholic Catechism Teacher

The Ofelia Navarro Story

by
W. Austin Gardner

Satan! Devil! Deceiver! screams Ofelia. She couldn't believe it. Carlos Marquina had gone to the same Catechism classes that she had. The priest and nuns had explained it all to him also. How could he deny the faith? How could he deny the Virgin Mary and the Saints. Certainly he would go to Hell.

Ofelia had learned and learned well. Her family called her the nun of the family. She was very religious. She worked very closely with the priest in her church. she taught all the young children so that they too could love the virgin and the saints. She was very dedicated. It was her plan to become a Nun, a Catholic sister.

As Carlos would go out on visitation and pass out gospel tracts he many times would see Ofelia. Each time he would give her a tract and invite her to church. He would tell her what a difference the Lord Jesus had made in his life. Something was missing in Ofelia's life. She was religious but lost. She had studied for hours. She herself was a teacher of religion now but there was an empty spot in her heart. All her studies, prayers, good works, and offerings could not fill this empty spot.

One day she had had all she could take. She would go to Carlos' church to see if it was really different. She heard the gospel. She got saved. She got baptized. She began to really study the Bible itself. She had always been told about the Bible before but had never spent time in the Bible. It made sense to her. For the first time she understood. She had a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and not just a ritual.

Ofelia began to study in the Bible college. She began serving in her church. She now witnessed to her family but about a relationship with Jesus Christ and not just religion. Her brother Luis came and got saved. He now is studying in the Bible college and wants to be a missionary. Her sisters have made professions of faith and even her parents have become attending occasionally.

Ofelia teaches in the Christian school in the Hunter Baptist Church. She works in the Sunday School. She testifies that for the first time in her life it all makes sense. She serves out of love and not "a have to". She loves to study her Bible and tell others about Jesus. Salvation is much more than just religion or rituals. It is a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.

Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name: John 1:12
